Interlibrary Loan FAQ

Interlibrary Loan is a way of extending our collection by borrowing from other libraries around the state and nation.  Books are mailed to the library or delivered once a week by van from other Maine libraries.  In the past, people paid postage to send their books back.  That is no longer the case, although some restrictions may apply to the number of books requested each month, especially if they have to come from out-of-state libraries.

What kind of materials are available?

Nearly any book is available, though new popular fiction is often held back for a couple months.  Movies and audiobooks are sometimes available.

Does it cost anything to borrow from another library?

No, although a monthly limit may be placed on books requested from out-of-state libraries.

How long can books be kept, and may they be renewed?

Typically, loan periods are 30 days.  Some libraries will allow one renewal.  We will never ask a lending library to renew a book twice.

Are there fines for overdue ILL books?

Yes, and some may be as much as a dollar per day.  If a lending library charges us fines, we will pass it on to the borrower.

How long does it take to get a book?

Typically, 3 days to a week, depending on the day of the week it is ordered and where it comes from.
