Downloadable Audio and Ebooks Coming

We are pleased to announce that the Christmas Fundraiser, hosted by Irv Faunce and Jan Collins-Faunce, raised enough money to fund our subscription to the Maine InfoNet Download Center.   Therefore, at the end of February, 2011, we will be offering downloadable audio books and ebooks for WFPL patrons.   More than 1,400 books including best-selling fiction, non-fiction, young adult and children’s content will be available through Maine InfoNet as downloadable eBooks. This is in addition to the ever-growing collection of downloadable audiobooks, currently totaling over 1,800 titles.

Look for this link on the website to access the Maine InfoNet Download Center.

Also known as “digital books”, eBooks are books that can be read on a computer screen or with portable e-reader devices, such as the Sony Reader, the Kobo and the Nook. The eBooks available from Maine InfoNet are also compatible with most computers, laptops and netbooks, and now work with the Apple iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone.  Soon they will be compatible with Droid based smartphones. The eBooks available through this system are unfortunately not supported by the Amazon Kindle at this time. Detailed information on which devices work with eBooks in this collection is posted on the Download Library web site.  Audio books may be downloaded to nearly any MP3 player or, in some cases, burned on a CD.

To access eBooks or audiobooks, log in by selecting the Wilton Free Public Library from the list of names of a participating libraries and enter your 5-digit library card number (including the leading zero).  There is a “Quick Start Guide” that explains how to get started downloading, and library staff are also happy to help.

Thank you to Irv and Jan, and to all who donated to the fund, for making this exciting new service a possibility.
