David Olson, Director, retiring in August

David Olson to Retire from Wilton Library
Wilton, ME – After ten years working devotedly as the Library Director for the Wilton Free Public Library, David L. Olson, a resident of Wilton, is set to retire in August.
David joined the WFPL as Interim Director in the summer of 2006 and was hired as Director in July of 2006. As Director, David was responsible for overseeing such activities as the building renovation project, several fund drives, ambitious programs, the book sale facility, the energy conservation project, and most recently starting the patio project.
David worked in several Wisconsin libraries before receiving his MLS degree from the University of Iowa in 1982. He directed libraries in the University of Montana and University of Maine Systems, and was a pioneer in the early use of library computer automation. David has said “I practically grew up in a library,” and has been a tireless supporter of libraries ever since. He was president of the Montana Academic Library Association, served on the board of the Central Maine Library District, and has served as a mentor, consultant, and teacher in libraries across the country.
Of his time at the WFPL, David remarked, “There have always been good people at my side to face the challenges. The staff I’ve had to work with is truly outstanding, forward-looking, game for new projects, and always on the side of the patron. WFPL may be small, but we have a big vision. We keep our eye on the road, but our destination is always the bright new future of information, wherever and whatever it might be.”
David is looking forward to spending more time on a variety of art and writing projects. He is an avid photographer, but his favorite pastime is SAT – “sitting and thinking.”
In lieu of a big send-off, David would prefer that patrons, friends, and neighbors stop by the library to visit before his final day on August 4th.
The Wilton Free Public Library is located in the foothills of western Maine, alongside Wilson Stream in downtown Wilton. The Library, which serves the communities and citizens of the Wilton, Dryden, East Wilton, and East Dixfield was incorporated in 1901 as The Wilton Free Public Library Association. Although it is significantly subsidized by the Town of Wilton, the Library remains a private, non-profit corporation. The WFPL is proud to be a Family Place Library, emphasizing services and collections for young parents and their children.
