Women, men, teens — learn to sew! Whether you just want to brush up on sewing or have never touched a sewing machine before, this is the class for you. In this two-session class you’ll learn the basics of using a home sewing machine so you can operate one on your own.

Sewing MachineSession One will cover sewing tools and materials: fabrics, thread types, needles, interfacing, etc.; what to look for in a sewing machine, and recommended web sites to explore for basic sewing lessons. There will be handouts for you to take home, as well as Q & A time. Then we’ll demonstrate several different sewing machines, their functions and features, and show some sewing techniques. We’ll cover threading a machine, winding and loading a bobbin, and sewing basic straight or zig zag stitches. You’ll get a chance to try it yourself, too.

Session Two covers additional sewing techniques and will include working on an actual sewing project. There will be suggestions for some easy projects to do for beginners, and we’ll decide as a class at Session One what project we’ll do at Session Two. You can also bring a project that you’re already doing to Session Two for specific advice. Depending on the project chosen, there may be a small fee for materials for Session Two, payable to the instructor.

Our instructor, Glenda Fay, has a life-long love of sewing. She’s worked as a professional seamstress and gives sewing lessons. She belongs to the Wilton/Jay quilting group, Country Square Quilters. “It is such a joy to plan a project and have it be a gorgeous work of art. I want as much knowledge as I can acquire to get better, and I love sharing my knowledge with others.”
