Director’s Blog: Energy-saving projects getting started

Last year we had an energy audit performed under a grant from Efficiency Maine. There were several recommendations made for ways the library could save money and make more efficient use of energy. In the next few days, we will be starting on some projects, funded by a grant from Stephen and Tabitha King, which will make the library more comfortable and less expensive to operate.

The air conditioning system that will be installed the last week of April includes a heat pump system that will allow us to use it as a heating source in the spring and autumn months. By turning off the oil burner during these months, we can save 30% on our heating oil costs. A. Murais Co. (Jay) will be doing the installation.

Last summer, we had to close the library three days because of high temperatures and humidity. Not only is it uncomfortable in the library on hot days, but heat and humidity is bad for the book collections.

Another project starting soon will add on-demand electric water heating. Currently, we keep the oil burner operating year round to heat the small amount of hot water that we use.

Finally, in May, we will be reinsulating the attic. Josh Wojcik of Upright Frameworks, LLC (Wilton) will be doing this project.
